The continent of Africa – its red earth and the name chosen for me, meaning “man of the red earth” (Hebrew) . I am Adam, born in Zambia the year after the nation became independent from Britain. My parents are U.K descendents and I am also a New Zealand citizen having immigrated with our family to Auckland (aged 5) then moving on to the Coromandel (Thames) before eventually settling and marrying in Hamilton city.
Although I visited Zambia in the 1980s on a short term O.E, I never seriously imagined the irony that my birthplace is where God would call our family of 5 to live for at least 3 years. Since 2004, “home” is the small but rapidly growing town (due to recently opened copper mines) of Solwezi, capital of the North Western Province.
Our task is to co-ordinate the APPLE project (Aids Prevention Plus Life Education) in this vast Province. We train Zambian school leavers ( Peer Educators) to visit Primary and High schools to teach a Bible based curriculum covering topics such as “I’m special, family relationships, Sex, HIV-AIDS, choices and consequences..”
We work in partnership with our mission sending agency, SIM ( Serving In Mission), Scripture Union and the Evangelical Church of Zambia, with the goal of reducing the high proportion of HIV -AIDS that has gripped this nation.
